7110: Shadowtech[]

  • (1991)
  • Author: Karl Wu
  • Number: 7110
  • ISBN 1555601561
  • Price: $15.00
  • Pages: 120 + 8 color
  • Sections: Introduction, Bionetics, Bioware, Cybertechnology, Cyberware, Eugenics/Genetics, Gene-Tech, Chemistry, Compounds, Technology and the Law, Equipment Table, Equipment Index
  • Overview: as well as adding lots of new implant-goodies to your runners’ wish-lists, this book provides an insight into how cyberware and bioware work in the game universe, together with explanations of genetic engineering. Rules for drugs and drug use are given, as are general data about the human body (the author is a doctor, apparently). The implants are divided into bioware and cyberware, with the bioware generally being of more use to combat-oriented characters than the cyberware. Headware cyberdecks are introduced, but you will need Virtual Realities to understand what is what with these. The last part of the book has a legalities section (expanded over that in Sprawl Sites), and tables listing the legalities of almost all equipment published until 1992.
  • Rating: 7.8
  • Comment: "A GM caveat book, it can seriously change the power level of a game, both for and against PC’s. Use with care."

I love this book for it's realistic edge. Unlike Cybertechnology, Shadowtech focuses on things, even though they aren't real existing things, they are presented and talked about like they very well could be. The talk about the bioware and new cyberware is steeped in realistic terms. The scientifical aspect makes me want to believe, and is easier to picture these things occuring in a future world. It's all very clear and well explained in it's information and layout. Pain editors, bone lacing, math spu's and bigger datajacks are all staples of the big movers and shakers of my shadowrun world. Shadowtech is my "magic treat bag", where when PC's and NPC's really are at the top of their game, they sport the junk from Shadowtech. I'm let down again by the artwork. The scans of the organs are crude. I can scan my biology textbooks and use Photoshop too. I get a lot of use out of the material in this book. The "really bad to mess with guys" are souped up with some of the things mentioned within those 2 paperback covers. Shadowtech does a good job of painting a futuristic picture of medicine. The sociological issues born of this technology and science like organ harvesting, cloning, improving on Nature's own designs is brought up, and not simply just passed by with a glance. At least there is one book that I'm not gonna say "damn 2nd edition or damn 3rd edition, as it soon will be." Hate those color prints and I don't get much use out of the legal codes. IMO FASA added that little section on because it was convenient, yet they had no idea where they were going with it.
