Sixteen Tongues is set in a near post-apocalyptic, post-human future, where technology has taken one step forward and one step backward. The film’s three central characters live in the same low-rent apartment building: Adrian Torque, an African-American renegade cop, and an Asian lesbian couple - Alec, a hacker extraordinaire, and Jenny, her live-in assassin. Alec is the only 'normal' human of the three. Adrian is a futuristic Frankenstein monster whose dead and mangled body was patched together with skin grafts from the tongues of the sixteen people who died in battle with him. Jenny is a genetically-modified combat cyborg programmed with contradictory impulses. On the one hand, she has a killer’s instinct, but also a bizarre sexual biology –a clitoris under each eyelid - which makes her achieve constant orgasms that leave her too sexually exhausted to act on her killer instincts. Alec spends her time trying to crack into the government’s security files to discover the name of Jenny’s doctor/designer. Jenny eventually crosses paths with Adrian in a climax of bizarre cyber-sex and explosive violence.

Sixteen Tongues is the long-awaited follow-up to Scooter McRae’s underground cult zombie hit, Shatterdead (1994). While it belongs to a tradition of science-fiction/cyberpunk cinema - which includes Bladerunner, Hardware, Strange Days, La Dernière Voix, and I.K.U. - Sixteen Tongues goes further than these films in depicting the dark sexual undercurrents of cyberpunk, including brief fusions of science-fiction and hardcore pornography. Sixteen Tongues is fiercely independent in the true meaning of the word: shot on video with small crew, extremely low-budgeted, and with a disregard for mainstream sensibility and taste. The latter is evident in the film’s decision to begin with its most difficult scene: an extended, snuff-like hardcore rape and murder. At times, the film succeeds in executing the interesting script ideas within its miniscule budget, like Adrian’s ongoing conversations with his inner voice achieved through his own synch-sound dialogue and his voice-over. At other times, it fails, with the minimal sets and some of its cyberpunk art direction. And yet, in-between these common, low-budget shortcomings is an uncompromising film which adds several new wrinkles to the science-fiction/cyberpunk imagination.

In the future, two very special people are hiding away in a very special place.

Adrian Torque is a police officer who has lost more than half his skin to an explosion that should have killed him. Instead, his destroyed epidermis has been replaced with the tongue meat of all the people who were killed that horrible night.

Where once he only felt, he is now being slowly driven mad by a never-ending stream of tastes.

Virginia Chin is a genetically engineered combatrix with a clitoris implanted beneath the epicanthic folds of each eye and a taste for blood. Her uncontrollable murderous impulses keeps her barely one step ahead of the law,

... and each blink of her eyes keeps her tightly poised within a state of heightened stimulation that only the blood of her enemies can sate.

And now, in a run down adults-only franchise called the Sappho Motel, where even the most obscure desire of every occupant can be met for a price, they are about to collide...
