Commercial Rackets are the establishment of criminal monopolies or oligopolies over legitimate industries.

Syndicates infiltrate corporations, and through the use of intimidation and bribery on corporate staff they gain influence over local branches of corporations and perhaps over the whole corporation. Permitting them to use the corporation or assets of the corporation to assist their criminal operations, as fronts for criminal operations, to commit financial crimes, and divert or outright steal their goods.

A popular target of organized crime is the construction industry. An industry in which it is very easy for criminals to launder their illicit profits via building projects. They extort the construction industry by threatening violence on its employees and/or damage to their building projects. Organized crime also earns money by swindling construction workers, coercing government officials, assisting in expediting building permits, and the harassment of contractors. Which results in construction projects that are grossly over budget and far behind schedule. The Mafia and Triads have been particularly successful in this racket.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
