The Glavnoye Razvedovatel'noye Upranleniy ("Main Intelligence Agency"), or GRU, is the Russian Red Army's foreign intelligence service and its primary counterintelligence service. Control of the GRU and its operations are distinct from the civilian-controlled Ministerstvo Vnutrennikh Del (MVD) and Upravleniye Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti (UGB).

One of the counterintelligence functions of the GRU is its political officers, who are assigned to units across the Red Army to ensure the Russian military is politically loyal to the National Supreme Soviet. Political officers serve to ensure the security, loyalty, and integrity of these units and can even supercede and contravene ranking field commanders' orders.

The GRU controls Russia's most well-known special operations force, the Spetsnaz.
