Los Angeles (flooded)

Los Angeles is a large city on the west coast of North America, in the Gulf of Santa Catalina. It has been annexed by Pueblo in 2061. The sprawl consists of what used to be the Los Angeles, Riverside, and Orange counties and the western part of the San Bernardino county.

History[]

In 2022 massive race riots break out in the city. Walls are erected to contain the riots. This ghetto which consists of Hawthorne, Gardena, and Compton becomes known as "El Infierno."[1][2]

In 2028, a large earthquake hits LA. It is referred to as the "Big One." Until it happens again, and again. Then it becomes known as the first of the "Big Ones." This earthquake destroyed LAX.[3]

In 2045, an offshore reactor explodes causing a large radioactive tidal wave that becomes known as the Green Tide. Full of toxic sludge it floods El Infierno. The initial flood killed thousands, and thousands more died in the following days. No outside help was ever sent into El Infierno.[3][4]

In 2046, a hacker group in El Infierno called Magestone, in response to the governments lack of response and clean up for the Green Tide; wipes the voting data for the gubernatorial election while it was being tallied. Sacramento attempting to track down the hackers sent the California Rangers and a few thousand mercenaries (Lone Star and corporate) into El Infierno. In the resulting massacre, the government forces killed 20,000 civilians in two days. Many mercenaries and rangers deserted their posts in disgust. After several days of fighting in a losing battle, Sacramento ordered its forces to pullout out of the city. LA demanded that the government assist in cleaning up the mess they made, but instead CalFree promptly disowned LA and declared it a "free city."[1][3][4]

In 2061, another earthquake rocks the city and brings down the walls of El Infierno. The desperate and enraged people of El Infierno surged outwards, burning, looting, and smashing everything they could. Upon the appeal of the city government, Pueblo deployed a military expeditionary force to Los Angeles. In a few days the city was pacified by Pueblo forces.[5]

In 2063, the Horizon Group is founded. Later in 2064, the Crash 2.0 knocks out LA's Matrix for only a few weeks, as Horizon implements it's newly licensed wireless Matrix technology and becomes the wireless provider of the Matrix in both LA and CalFree. Next, Horizon bought out Virtual Disney in 2068, becoming the largest megacorp in the Los Angeles sprawl.[3]

On March 8, 2069, an earthquake generated by the "Twins" (San Pedro Shelf Fault and San Andres Fault) shakes the whole Earth. In Africa it's reported that people saw their well-water ripple. In Los Angeles, entire blocks are swallowed by great sinkholes. Then a tsunami struck the city.[6] Some of the parts of the city that were 100 meters above sea level ended up underwater. Over 100,000 people died from the earthquake and its aftermath, and that's not counting the SINless.[7] Though whole parts of the city are submerged or were swallowed by sinkholes, the arcologies still stand and so do the freeways. Magic is suspected to be behind the geological discrepancies.[8]

In 2070, a elaborate network of tunnels and caverns under LA is discovered. It is apparently a magical phenomenon extending down to San Diego and running all along the coast. It becomes known as Deep Lacuna.[9]
