Red Dragon Association or Hung Lung Mun is a centuries-old Triad, which used to be known as the "Red Fists".[1] The syndicate is based in Hong Kong with ties to the Great Dragon Lung and the AAA-rated megacorp, Wuxing, Inc..[2] It is a criminal empire that extends throughout China, Southeast Asia, North America, South America, and Australia.[3] Which is the largest and most powerful Triad in the world, and the strongest in Hong Kong.[3]

Membership: 10s of 1000s (likely)[4]

Annual Revenue: multi-Billions (nuyen, likely)[5]

History of the Red DragonsEdit

Ascendancy of the Red DragonsEdit

Being hundreds of years old, they have a centuries-old rivalry with the White Lotus Society.[6] The enmity between the two dates back at least to the Boxer Rebellion (1899-1901).[7] In 2017, with the assistance of the Great Dragon Lung, their main rivals in Hong Kong at the time were destroyed, the Majestic Peacock Association.[8][9] During the early decades of the Sixth World, it competed with the Yellow Lotus Triad. In 2062-2063, it waged a global war in the underworld against the Yellow Lotus destroying their rival.[10]

Expansion of the Red DragonsEdit

Since 2021, the Red Dragons have expanded their empire throughout the Pacific Rim. In the neighboring countries, they have absorbed the smaller local Triads, and seized chunks of the regional and local criminal markets. They have also been expanding into Yakuza territories, which has resulted in turf wars in Southeast Asia, Oceania, and the Pacific Northwest of the former United States.[9]

While the Red Dragons have had setbacks, they have steadily made gains at the expense of the Yakuza. Their most recent coup was establishing themselves in the Yakuza's stronghold (Japan) and expanding their network throughout the country.[9][11] In Europe, the Red Dragons are expanding in the Allied German States with the assistance of Wuxing, Inc..[12][13] They have also expanded their influence into Russia, specifically the Russian Far East and the island of Kamchatka, and possibly as far west as Lake Baikal (north of Mongolia).[14][15]

Triad OrganizationEdit

StructureEdit

The Red Dragon Association is the most united Triad syndicate in the world, member gangs operating closely with a largely unified vision.[16] They are extremely well-financed and therefore are able to start up branches anywhere there is a market worth exploiting.[17] The Triad has dozens of branches in five of the six populated continents, and though those branches are either autonomous or independent they all pay tribute to Hong Kong.[3][17]

Currently the dragonhead (Lodge Master) is Hsiao Wai-Gong.[17] Serving as the Incense Master is the aging Mao Bei who also is a vassal of the Red Dragon Lung.[3] The power behind the Red Dragons and its true master is the Great Dragon Lung, who has several operatives within the syndicate including an elite team known as "The One" which is part of the Triad's inner circle. It consists of the physical adept William Xian, the female troll and technomancer Zarah, and Master Wu the elven mage.[18][19] Most of the higher ranking members within the Red Dragons are Awakened, either mages or physical adepts.[17]

MembershipEdit

The Red Dragons accept nearly anyone into their organization. Not only do they have Chinese within the Triad, but they also have non-Chinese (one of which is in the inner circle). They have both humans and metahumans within their ranks, and at least two metahumans are within the inner circle. In the syndicate are both Awakened and Technomancers, both of whom are also represented within the inner circle. They have in the organization, mundanes who are augmented (including those with cyberware) and those with zero augmentation. Women are also accepted into the Triad and at least two are in the inner circle. They even accept the transgendered into the syndicate.[20][21][22][23][24][25]

Most members of the Triad are Han Chinese and male, and except for one known individual all of the higher ranking members are Chinese.[17] In the city of Hong Kong, there is a large pool of non-Chinese immigrants from which the Red Dragon recruits including Vietnamese, Filipinos, Koreans, and Indians (especially in the slums of the Kowloon Peninsula).[26][27][28][29][30][31] Outside of China in other cities, the Red Dragons likewise recruit non-Chinese. In the Hamburg metroplex of the AGS, the Red Dragons are recruiting extensively from among the Southeast Asian refugees (Indochinese) from the Year of the Comet, especially from among the Vietnamese.[32][33]

Within their ranks they have metahumans of every race, as they could care less what type you are.[21] In Hong Kong, the slums like in any other metroplex in the world are thick with metahumans (especially in the Kowloon Peninsula), from which the Red Dragons like the other major Triads have been recruiting.[26][27][28][29][30][31] Outside of China the Red Dragons like other Triads, make it their policy to approach those metahumans who are disaffected because they can't join the Yakuza or Mafia and recruit them. In fact metahumans have specific advantage in that the Triads perceive them as unlikely to be spies for the Yakuza, for obvious reasons (especially trogs).[21][20][34]

Red Dragon AssetsEdit

MagicEdit

Among the magic-heavy Triads, the Red Dragons stand out. They have mages who have been trained by the great dragon Lung and whom are its agents. Therefore everything that makes a Triad dangerous is far more so with the Red Dragons when it comes to magic. The mages of the Red Dragons have a wide variety of spells to call upon, including; Lightning Bolt, Flamethrower, Sonic Blast, Magic Manabolt, Stunbolt, Ball Lightning, Manaball, Powerball, Acid Stream, Demolish, Shatter, Armor, Physical Barrier, Improved Invisibility, Levitate, Increase Reflexes, Combat Sense, Detect Enemies, Confusion, Detect Magic, Heal, Analyze Truth, Detect Life, Silence, and so on.[35][36][37]

CyberwareEdit

In the Red Dragons, when it comes to those who have been augmented, it varies greatly with the officers and specialists normally having more augmentation and which is of higher quality than that which the soldiers have. Augmented personnel in the Red Dragons or its affiliates have received such enhancements as cybereyes, wired reflexes, cyberarms, bone lacing, cyberears, muscle augmentation, reaction enhancers, muscle toner, dermal armor, commlinks, datajack, and cerebral booster. Which ranges from basic cyberware to as high as betaware.[35][38][39][40][41][42][43]

Soldiers & AgentsEdit

The Sze Kau (49ers) of the Red Dragons are well-trained in the martial arts and in the use of firearms.[44][45] Which makes them stand out from the thugs who make up the rank-n-file of many other criminal outfits. Red Dragon operatives rely on stealth and on being inconspicuous, but if the situation calls for it the operatives will strike hard and fast.[45] As for Red Dragon hitmen, they show more intelligence and imagination than their counterpart hitmen in the Yakuza or Mafia, and have an unfailing aversion to informing on their benefactor.[46] The soldiers, lieutenants, and specialists (riggers, smugglers, etc) of the Red Dragons and its affiliates are usually either physical adepts or they have been augmented, though there are some who are neither magical or augmented.[35][47][39][48][49][42][50][51][52]

In addition usually they are equipped with ballistic armor (vest, jacket, or clothing) and armed with automatic firearms (machine pistols, sub-machine guns, and assault rifles). Their soldiers in some cases are armed with shotguns, grenades, high-powered sniper rifles, or grenade launchers. Usually they will also be armed with either some type of sword (jian sword, katana, or vibro-sword) or much smaller bladed weapons (knife, shuriken, or dagger). Sometimes the soldiers will carry a shock staff or stun baton. Within the Red Dragons are teams of specialists such as a crew of snipers led by a physical adept and the previously mentioned "The One". Members may also sport LED tattoos on their back and chest.[35][53][39][54][55][42][56][57]

Private ArmyEdit

The Red Dragons have the distinction of having their own little private army of mercenaries at their beck and call. Working for the Red Dragon Triad since 2070, is the 58th Battle Brigade. It was an elite mercenary unit formed in 2054 and founded by a Chinese colonel whom were considered elite jungle fighters. The unit saw much action, primarily in Southeast Asia. In the aftermath of a disastrous operation in Vietnam, they fell on hard times.

Now it is a resilient light infantry force of 2-3 companies (160-450 men) whom have become expert pillagers and scavengers, and whose method of waging war is shoot first, shoot often, and shoot them in the back if possible.[58] In 2076, the 58th Battle Brigade was used in the Battle of Manhattan against Prometheus Engineering leading to its eventual takeover by the Red Dragons' new ally, Wuxing, Inc.[59][60]

Triad OperationsEdit

Gambling RacketEdit

Back home in China and Hong Kong, the Red Dragons run an extensive gambling network. In greater China, they control underground gambling venues, sports betting, online gambling, and so on.[21][26] They run exclusive, discreet, and very high-stakes gambling clubs and casinos which have extensive Matrix and magical security. On top of that these establishments are usually inconspicuous, despite being in high-traffic areas.[61]

In Asian communities across the Pacific Rime (the Chinatowns), where the Red Dragons have a presence they run small-time gambling parlors for lotteries, mahjong, fan-tan, and dice games.[62] The Red Dragons also stage bloodsports. Underground fights in cities in which humans and metahumans are locked in full contact hand-to-hand combat.[62][63]

Prostitution RacketEdit

Within Hong Kong and China itself, they run a variety of prostitution operations, from dirty, cheap love hotels to high society courtesan brothels.[21][26] The Red Dragons give their high-end working girls 1000s in nuyen in cosmetic work.[64] They also run bunraku-type brothels brothels. In which the women have been sculpted and brainwashed (via magic, technology, or other means), becoming a blank programmable meat puppet.[65]

Outside of China, the Red Dragons bring in "talent" from other countries to work as prostitutes, using false datawork, often as "entertainers", "dancers", and so on.[66] In these brothels most of the employees were brought in illegally and they may be paying off their debt to the smuggling syndicate.[61]

Counterfeit Goods RacketEdit

What the Red Dragons are known best for is brand knockoffs, as they are the biggest producer of counterfeit goods among the criminal organizations, with the quickest turnaround time, and the largest global distribution network.[17] The main items that the Red Dragons are into counterfeit are weapons, electronics, fashions, and media. In many cases the Red Dragons will produce a plan to have a desktop forgery up and running within hours after the announcement of a new product, even before you find it in a store. With clean raw material and a comparatively affordable plan, the Red Dragons can end up selling the knockoffs around the world before the megacorp which designed the item does.[61]

Matrix Crime RacketEdit

When it comes to computer crime, the Red Dragons main activity is identity theft and creating false identities, which assists their people trafficking operations. They also have Matrix-accessible gambling houses, but those are not as common. Though they can be lucrative, there is too much competition online so the Triads don't invest too much in that market.[61]

Some of the other types of Matrix crime the Red Dragons are into include such things as running Matrix porn sites and performing all-out Matrix invasions.[67][68] Their operation in the city of Montreal has turned it into the Matrix crime capital of North America.[69]

Protection RacketEdit

Unlike many other crime syndicates, the Red Dragons will actually provide protection to the those that make protection payments (e.g. local businesses). They will work at reducing street crime on that street, block, community, or district.[70][71][72]

In the city of Hong Kong, the Red Dragon gangs operate in the Kwai Tsing district where they have influence over a significant part of the city's dockyards, across all of the Kowloon Peninsula, and on Hong Kong Island. Throughout the aforementioned areas, the Red Dragons run vast protection rackets in which they threaten businesses, collecting their protection payments.[3]

Smuggling RacketEdit

The Red Dragons smuggle everything, from drugs to weapons, electronics to personnel, and of course brand counterfeit goods. They are experts when it comes to the smuggling of goods across the various international borders around the world. Many times a Red Dragon affiliate is on the other side of the border, usually running the docks. When there isn't an affiliate, the Red Dragons will work with another syndicate.[73] During the civil war in China, the Red Dragons were the biggest smugglers of black-market weapons, technology, and food to the warlords and the desperate people within China, making obscene amounts of nuyen.[9]

Drugs & BTLs RacketEdit

The Red Dragons are one of the major drug cartels of the Far East, with major operations in both the Golden Triangle (opiates) and in BTLs, including a plant in Shenyang which produces 2% of the world's BTLs.[74][75][76] Like the other major Triads, the Red Dragons run massive operations that use peasant slave-labor and swarms of drones working the fields, teams of scientists that dream up new drug cocktails, and entire communities of indentured workers who process and package the product.[77]

They employ armies of mercenaries and thugs whose job is to protect it all, crews of dedicated smugglers to transport the product, and enough lawyers and bought for politicians to make even a dragon wary about getting involved.[77] Some of those opium fields are being protected by the local military who are equipped with the best weapons and gear that the Red Dragons can smuggle, buy, or steal.[70]

People Smuggling RacketEdit

Since within China there is always political instability somewhere, it means that there are refugees whom are desperate to escape and have a better life somewhere else. The Red Dragons are involved in the smuggling of those refugees to other nations, in exchange for an outrageous upfront fee or laboring as indentured workers until their debt is paid off.[61] They smuggle illegal workers into Japan from Korea and the Philippines (in addition to those from mainland China).[78]

Commercial RacketEdit

Due to the infiltration of corporations by the Red Dragons and its affiliates, and their use of bribery and intimidation on corporate staff they have gained much influence over the local branches of various corporations including in the cities of Hong Kong, Neo-Tokyo, and New York City.[17][3]

One method that the Red Dragons use to extend their influence is loaning money to businesses which have fallen on hard times. They recently used it to great success in Japan where in the aftermath of the Year of the Comet, the Red Dragons gave loans to small businesses that lacked insurance and pretty soon ended up in control of said businesses. Which happened throughout Japan, establishing the Red Dragons across the nation.[11]

Throughout the Pacific Rim, the Red Dragons have established rackets in the construction industries of many cities. In which they extort corporations involved in the construction industry by threatening damage to construction projects and/or violence to their employees. They also make loads of money from pressuring government officials, fleecing the construction workers, harassing the contractors, and helping in the expediting of permits.[79][80][81]

Arms Smuggling RacketEdit

Today, the Red Dragons control the gunrunning trade in Hong Kong. Due to their widespread control of Hong Kong's Kwai Chung Container Port, they are able to smuggle heavy weaponry (e.g. heavy machine-guns, artillery, etc) via shipping containers. They control the gun trade in Hong Kong, bringing in weapons from China's warlord states and selling them to the pirates and gangs.[3] Assisting them in their gun-running operations are corrupt cops within the Hong Kong Police Force.[82] The Red Dragons have strong connections to the armed forces of the Canton Confederation. It is rumored that they smuggle nuclear technology out of China and are willing to sell it to any warlord that has the nuyen to pay the asking price.[83]

Corporate RelationsEdit

For a long time, the Red Dragons and Wuxing, Inc. were in opposition to each other with the latter working with the Yellow Lotus Triad. Recently things have changed, though the reason is unknown for the moment. They are now allies, working together to help advance each other's interests. Wuxing, Inc consulted with the dragon Lung whom directed them to go to the Red Dragons who assisted Wuxing, Inc in its successful takeover of the AA-rated Prometheus Engineering by hiring shadowrunners and a small army of mercenaries.[84][85] Wuxing, Inc in 2077-2078 helped the Red Dragons expand their criminal operations in the Allied German States.[86]

In addition to Wuxing, Inc., the Red Dragons also have direct and indirect (via their vassals) connections with other megacorporations. Through their vassals the Large Circle League in New York City, they have ties to Spinrad Industries a corporation with cutting edge cyberware and biotechnology.[87] Thru them they also have ties to the Shiawase Corporation which has had a longstanding relationship with the Large Circle League.[88] In Hong Kong, the Triad is deeply involved with the Yokogawa Corporation.[89]

Global Empire of CrimeEdit

The Red Dragon Triad has dozens of branches, affiliates, and vassal gangs across the world. The only continents where they do not have a presence is in Africa and frozen Antarctica. The continent with the greatest Red Dragon presence is Asia and the one with the smallest presence is Europe with only a few vassals or affiliates;[3][17]

ChinaEdit

  • The Red Dragons are active throughout mainland China.[3] They are strongest in the Canton Confederation (especially the southeastern part) and have a stronghold in Macao.[7][90] Due to the interests of the Great Dragon Lung, the states of Sichuan and Gansu are another focus of the Triad, especially the city of Chongqing in Sichuan.[91] The Coastal Provinces are also of special interest to the Red Dragons, specifically the province of Shandong where the dragon Lung resides, and the port cities of Qingdao and Shanghai.[92][93] They also have a major stronghold in Manchuria in the city of Shenyang, one of their centers of BTL production.[94]

Rest of AsiaEdit

  • Japan: In the aftermath of the earthquakes in the Year of the Comet, the Red Dragons have not only established a foothold in Japan, but they have spread like a plague. By providing loans to the desperate, they've taken control of legitimate businesses throughout the nation and set up criminal enterprises at the expense of the local Yakuza. It is Neo-Tokyo where they have their biggest foothold.[11][95]
  • Russia: Directly or through it's vassals, it's reach extends into Siberia. Especially the Russian Far East (e.g. Vladivostok and the island of Kamchatka to the northeast of Japan.[14]
  • Southeast Asia: The Red Dragons are active throughout Southeast Asia.[7][3] Like the other major Triads, it's main focus is the Golden Triangle and its drug trade. Other locations of note are the cities of Bangkok, Singapore, and Manila and the countries of Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia.[96][14][9][93]

Western HemisphereEdit

EuropeEdit

  • The Red Dragons have a few branches in this continent, the most important ones at the moment being in Germany (the city of Hamburg) which is growing in power due to the assistance of Wuxing, Inc. , in the state of Portugal, and in the United Kingdom (the city of London).[101][102][103]

OceaniaEdit

  • Australia: It has a presence throughout Australia.[3] The strongest affiliate there is the Golden Triangle Society which is the 3rd most powerful Triad in the country.[104] In Australia, the cities of Brisbane and Cairns are where Red Dragon activity is strongest.[14][104]
  • Pacific Islands: The Red Dragons have expanded into the island chains of central and southern Pacific (e.g. Polynesia).[9]

TriviaEdit

The "Red Fists" is an actual Triad which existed in the 19th century, also known as the "Red Boxing School". It along with the White Lotus Society and the Big Swords Society (another Triad) participated in the unsuccessful anti-Western Boxer Rebellion, as they attempted to expel the Western aggressors from China. They were known for practicing martial arts, praying to Chinese deities, and believing that magic and Chi martial arts would prevail against Western firearms.[1][2]
