The Schattengesellschaft is a Matrix network which consists of a 1000+ small to medium sized Matrix gangs. It is part secret society, part professional organization, and part digital mafia. It's unknown who are the leaders, though any of 300 top Matrix deckers, technomancers, etc have been suspected.
It was established in the mid-2060s by a few dozen groups that joined forces to survive the crackdown at the time, in which criminal Matrix outfits were being taken down by corporate hit squads from NeoNET's Clean Matrix Program. They have influence over nearly every legitimate and illicit business in cyberspace.
The group acts as a parent company to the Matrix gangs providing them with support in the form of information, legal aid, money, personnel, material goods, software, and occasionally shadowrunners. The gangs in turn are expected to promptly and without any questions fullfil any request made to them by the network, and these requests happen about once a month and rarely involves more than the gang is able to offer.
There isn't any expectations of individual members nor is there a code of conduct, even when it comes to secrecy. Member gangs normally have good relations with other large syndicates, especially with the Yakuza. They have good relations with the Red Dragon Triad, but usually are on bad terms with other Triads although their relations with the Sapphire Crane Society of Los Angeles have been improving.[1]
