Smoke Circle Society (lodges and its human trafficking network)

The Smoke Circle Society is a triad based in Hong Kong. It ranks among the most powerful of Triads in Hong Kong, China, and the rest of Asia.

Membership: 10,000+ (likely)[1]

Annual Revenue: Billion+ (nuyen, minimum)[2]

The Smoke Circle Society is currently led by the 88-year old Shing Li Tai who is the Shan Chu (Dragonhead). He is assisted by his deputy the dwarf Xiao Shu, the inscrutable and beautiful Incense Master, Xi Shu and the lethal cybernetically-enhanced Guardian known as Gengchen (Metal Dragon).[3]

Like the other major Hong Kong Triads, it actively recruits metahumans. They also recruit the non-Chinese into its ranks in Hong Kong which includes Filipinos, Vietnamese, and Indians.[4][5][6][7] Some of the members sport tattoos, the moving neon kind.[8]

Like the other major Hong Kong Triads, it recruits extensively from the Awakened, and therefore is strong in magical forces as demonstrated in the Smoke Circle-Black Chrysanthemum War during the Battle of Kowloon City. They also have members who are cybered, as is evident from the cybered Guardian, though how often members are cybered is unknown.

Criminal Enterprises[]

The Smoke Circle Society controls the largest share of the trade in Golden Triangle opium and Awakened drugs, having agreements with several of Southeast Asia's drug lords. Other major sources of revenue for the triad are the trafficking in wildlife parts, talislegging, and prostitution. They get young children addicted to their drugs and then force them to work in the flesh trade.[9][10]

In Hong Kong they are also strong in gambling. While they have gangs throughout the Kowloon Peninsula which is known for its slums with mainland refugees, non-Chinese immigrants, and metahumans, the Triad's core leadership operates out of the southern coast of Hong Kong Island and throughout the outlying islands.[11]

Their human trafficking network extends throughout Asia, where take advantage of poor and desperate families to buy unwanted girls for the sex trade.[12] It is not only one of the largest Triads in Hong Kong, but also is one of the two Triads involved in the most loathsome crimes in Hong Kong and perhaps in all of Asia.[13]

Tempo Drug War[]

In 2071, the Smoke Circle Society went to war with the Black Chrysanthemum Triad in Hong Kong for control of the Tempo drug trade. It was a brutal, bloody conflict which cost 10s of thousands of lives. In the end both triads were greatly weakened, as the Smoke Circle Society lost 50% of its strength and their rivals the Black Chrysanthemum lost 30%. Fighting between the two continues, but a lower intensity.[14]

Criminal Network[]

  • China: Active throughout the Chinese successor states. In the state of Yunnan it's focus is the drug trade and in the city-state of Hong Kong it fiercely competes with the other major Triads.[15][14] They run a human trafficking network throughout China.[12]
  • Rest of Asia: It operates throughout the rest of Asia. Like it's rival Triads, it's focus is on the Golden Triangle drug trade. It's other big business is in human trafficking, for the flesh trade and it's network extends throughout the continent of Asia.[15][16][12]
