Open: Embedding GoogleMaps

I'd like to try and embed some GoogleMaps that players have created based off of the SR world. I've read up that it requires access to mediawiki pages, but when I tried to create one of these pages I couldn't edit the page. So if someone could make a mediawiki page with:

<iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=201375040006088778489.0004dc233c3f9a36e7362&msa=0&ie=UTF8&t=h&ll=42.029492,-87.81578&spn=0.927745,0.830841&output=embed"></iframe>
View <a href="https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=201375040006088778489.0004dc233c3f9a36e7362&msa=0&ie=UTF8&t=h&ll=42.029492,-87.81578&spn=0.927745,0.830841&source=embed" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">Shadowrun - Chicago 2073</a> in a larger map

so we can test it out, that'd be good, or if there is some way I can get access to create mediawiki pages, that'd be cool too.

Open: Background image and readability

I think the big "Shadowrun" logo on the background image makes the articles harder to read. Maybe we could use a different wallpaper or make the article background more opaque? --ShxLoki (talk) 00:25, December 6, 2012 (UTC)

I don't know if it's just me but the readability with the transparency is bad imo. Particularly when you have a role-playing and text heavy focus to articles. The rest is fine, just that transparency... I think it detracts from the usability and does not benefit appearance-wise. Citadel535 (talk) 23:45, July 29, 2013 (UTC)

No, as you can see from my comment above. I see exactly the same problem.

Migrating Sixth World Wiki

As the Sixth World Wiki has been mostly dead for about a year, I would like to migrate its content here, and revitalize this wiki. See my proposal at dumpshock forums and at shadowrun4 forums. Is there anybody active at this wiki? Piotrus 17:20, August 5, 2011 (UTC)

Category synch

Before we start porting articles, it would be good to synch categories between this and the 6WW wiki.

Top level:

Second level, this wiki is a bit chaotic with 22 categories, I'll be cleaning them up soon. 6WW has only three categories:

This is much cleaner, and I'd like to organize our categories like that, although the RPG category would be a subcategory to Shadowrun games. I'll also add Category:Shadowrun community, in which we can have articles on community websites, and such.Piotrus 21:54, August 5, 2011 (UTC)

Update: top level categories synched. Piotrus 22:05, August 5, 2011 (UTC)
After the merge, it appears they were not synched. We still have Category:Browse, but also the Category:Categories. I'll try to deal with this in the near future. Any help appreciated. Piotrus 16:17, November 5, 2011 (UTC)
Category merge done. Category:Categories can be deleted. There is still some cleanup needed within categories, such as renaming, but this is simply stuff that needed to be done in the past. --Piotrus 06:14, November 14, 2011 (UTC)

Canon

The Sixth World Wiki only allowed canon details (or apocryphal in the case of material by SR authors that did not make it to publishing and was not replaced).
We should make sure that articles here either hold to the same standard, or only allow non-canon material in a section labeled as such. —MJBurrage(TC) 00:44, August 9, 2011 (UTC)

6WW wanted to have only canon/aprocryphal, but it didn't have enough active editors to police this rule, hence this, this, and this. I asked but never got admin rights there, so I could do little but tag the garbage... Sigh. I do believe that non-canon material should be either disallowed, or clearly tagged as such in an off section. Or it could be allowed in userspace, where people could keep descriptions of their own PCs, adventures, and such. Piotrus 01:03, August 9, 2011 (UTC)
And for the question of non-canon material: here we had the non-player character profiles. These are all non-canon, and should stay here. In first-time the collection of self created characters (lots of them with complete stats) was the main purpose of this Wiki here. --Dorle 12:48, August 9, 2011 (UTC)
I am fine with user created content in the main space of the wiki, but there should be headers so that readers know what they are reading. I.E. if an editor adds a write-up of a location/character/item from there own game it should have a non-canon header, and should only be in a non-canon sub-category.
So for example Category:Non-player characters should be for canon NPCs, with all non-canon NPCs in Category:Non-canon NPCs (which would be a sub-category of Category:Non-player characters)
Basically I see three levels of "officialness".
  1. Canon – material published by SR license holders: FASA/FanPro/Catalyst books, Ka-Ge magazine, and Shadowland magazine.
  2. Apocryphal – material written by professional authors. Examples include A) things cut from official books like Patrick Goodman's material from Running Wild, Shadows of Latin America, etc. and B) things published in magazines such as White Wolf, Pyramid, The Shadowrun Supplemental, etc.
  3. Non-canon - Everything else.
Main articles should all be canon, with detailed footnotes. Disambiguation should be done anything else. Example: New Orleans should be the canon summary, with a separate New Orleans (White Wolf) for the details that originate in the article series from White Wolf magazine.
This way we have a large base of information, and everyone knows what their reading.
P.S. links to non-canon articles should usually not appear in the body of a canon article, but be grouped in a section at the end.
MJBurrage(TC) 16:00, August 10, 2011 (UTC)
Seems reasonable. I don't mind non-canon NPCs and even settings, the more the merrier, as long as all non-canon material is clearly described as such. Btw, to be consistent, I'd either call the categories you mention Category:NPCs or Category:Non-canon non-player characters. And yes, I can see a "see also non-canon related material" section with links at the bottom.Piotrus 21:08, August 10, 2011 (UTC)
Now we have the Category:Potentially_NonCanon with its corresponding template (Template:Potentially_NonCanon) from 6WW for content we are unsure about. I suggest creation of a new template and category for clearly non-canon material. Per discussion above, we seem to agree we are fine with fan works AS LONG AS THEY ARE CLEARY MARKED AS SUCH, right? Piotrus 16:18, November 5, 2011 (UTC)

Admins

Are there any admins active here? If no, I'll apply for admin rights in order to go with the merger with 6WW, whose admin gave the go-ahead for this move (Redjack, here). Piotrus 00:08, August 9, 2011 (UTC)

I'm Admin here. --Dorle 12:48, August 9, 2011 (UTC)
Good to see you are active then :) There will be some deletion needed when we import 6WW stuff, depending on how much control we have over what we import. At the very least, we will have to delete a bunch of categories after they are renamed. Piotrus 21:09, August 10, 2011 (UTC)
I'll do admin stuff, if we import the old Dumpshock wiki.
Laird Angus 22:07, September 24, 2011 (UTC)
Good to know. I heard few days ago from Angela that we have delays but work the move is still happening, so... I guess we just wait. Piotrus 07:59, September 25, 2011 (UTC)

Migrating wikis - how to

So, does anybody has actual experience migrating wikis, or do we (I...) need to go and look for a guide or ask somebody at Wikia help for, well, help? Because I am seeing a decent amount of people saying "good idea" and a distinct lack of people doing anything :) --Piotrus 20:10, August 27, 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, I've realy no idea how to do something like "migrating wikis". - The only Way I know is to Copy&Past Articles, that should be imported here. (But then the version history would be lost).
--Dorle 14:37, August 28, 2011 (UTC)
I think there are automated tools for that. I am aware they exist with regards to Wikipedia (see this and this, and as Wikia and 6WW also run mediawiki, I think it is likely there is an automated tool that could help us. I couldn't find anything by searching the help.wikia.com for transwiki or migrate, so I've advanced to asking for help here. Hopefully we will get some useful reply. Piotrus 22:28, August 29, 2011 (UTC)
Hi. Wikia has a lot of experience with this sort of migration and it can all be automated, so you don't need to copy and paste any content as that would lose the important page histories. I'm going to email Piotrus to get some more details and see how we can do this. Angela 10:58, August 30, 2011 (UTC)

Merged complete

Now we need to clean thing up. I'll work on category synching in the near future. Piotrus 16:12, November 5, 2011 (UTC)

Wow, way to keep SWW alive, Piotrus! I haven't checked in as often as I wanted with the wiki, since most of the canon material seemed stable. Mshieh 11:51, December 20, 2011 (UTC) (old SixthWorldWiki admin)

Interwiki links

Another issue to clean up, as noted on my talk page, is how to deal with broken interwiki links. Piotrus 16:19, November 5, 2011 (UTC)

copied from User talk:ShxLoki:

I noticed the problem with interwikis yesterday. As I'd like to spend the near future fixing categories, could you try to ask how to fix interwikis at Wikia Help forum you found? I am not very familiar with Wikia so I am not sure how to fix that; and I'd hope they would have a bot that could do the fixes automatically. Hopefully if we ask we will get a reply; or at worst we will know we are on our own. --Piotrus

Okay, I can do that.
--ShxLoki 16:35, November 5, 2011 (UTC)
For the record, we have three iwki to fix: german, french and polish. See Gangs page for one with all three. The Polish one I justed added yesterday, incorrectly, because it does work at Poland. Unfortunately, I won't have time to help much till Tuesday, I think. Piotrus 16:47, November 5, 2011 (UTC)
The Polish links work, so does Hungarian by the way, because both are hosted under pl.shadowrun.wikia.com and hu.shadowrun.wikia.com respectively, seems this is automatically recognized. The link in Gangs was just broken, I fixed it.
--ShxLoki 18:03, November 5, 2011 (UTC)
I have posted a request for assistance here: community:Forum:Shadowrun.wikia interwiki links to external wikis
--ShxLoki 18:19, November 5, 2011 (UTC)

Seems it was fixed, with interwiki being converted to external links. --Piotrus 16:41, November 9, 2011 (UTC)

Now it also works with normal interwikilinks. Very nice. Almost everything has been reestablished, in fact I believe only Archaos has to change the French links to Wikia and we are set.
--ShxLoki 10:02, November 12, 2011 (UTC)
How to add links to http://shadowrun.fr/wiki in this wiki ? Archaos-JdR (talk) 21:25, January 29, 2013 (UTC)
with [[fr:Pagename in french wiki]].
--Dorle (talk) 16:24, January 30, 2013 (UTC)

If you want to use the 6WW/Dumpshock skin (monobook)

Go to http://shadowrun.wikia.com/index.php?title=Special:Preferences and select the monobook skin from the "Site Layouts" section in the "My info" tab. This skin is not as supported as the wikia default, but personally I like it more. Some dumpshock users may find that useful. --Piotrus 16:40, November 9, 2011 (UTC)

Sixth World Wiki

Just wanted to let you guys know that there's already a wiki about Shadowrun licensed under the GFDL: Sixth World Wiki. Quin 18:51, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

I contacted them about joining us, but the admin there feels the general Shadowrun focus of this wiki isn't in line with their world-based focus. However, the content of both wikis is freely licensed, so you are welcome to import the content here if you feel it is useful. You could adapt template:wikipedia to attribute that wiki. Angela (talk) 11:22, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Quartz skin

Hi, you may have heard that Wikia is updating its default skin to "Monaco" (skin info, features). This wiki is currently on the old Quartz skin (you may see it differently depending on your preferences). So we would like to switch you over. There are 7 color schemes to choose from:

Mini_sapphire.png Mini_jade.png Mini_slate.png Mini_smoke.png
Sapphire Jade Slate Smoke
Mini_beach.png Mini_brick.png Mini_gamer.png
Beach Brick Gaming

Alternatively, you can choose to make a custom scheme, like Memory Alpha, Military Wikia, Rappelz or even (if you really want to see what can be done) UK Transport Wikia. For more examples, see here.

Any admin can set the scheme, just go to your preferences, choose the "skin" tab, and scroll down to the admin options section. For a custom scheme you will need to follow the instructions on the help page.

As the wiki is relatively quiet and no skin customization has occurred, I have switched the wiki to Monaco Sapphire for now. Kirkburn (talk) 22:35, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Overhaul

Hullo! I've just given your Main Page a bit of an overhaul, similar to the current new Wikia wiki style. Feel free to revert if you don't like it, but it should make it easier to add stuff :) Kirkburn (talk) 14:39, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
