Shadowrun Wiki

Tibet is a closed-off country in East Asia. No one can get in or out without powerful magic or the Seal of the Green Gloves, bequeathed in Dunkelzahn's Will to Inazo Aneki, CEO of Renraku Computer Systems.[1]

History[]

  • 2010 - The Tibetan-proclaimed 11th Panchen Lama dies under Chinese house arrest. The Chinese government allows the 14th Dalai Lama to return to Tibet to quell unrest.
  • 2011, Mar - Strange magical phenomena manifest around the borders of Tibet, making operations difficult for the Chinese military and encouraging protests from the native Tibetan population.
  • 2011, Sep - As the magical manifestations increase, the 14th Dalai Lama releases a pre-recorded video message stating that the manifestations are non aggressive, but warns against those who would intrude on Tibet without permission.
  • 2011, Oct - The Chinese military responds to the Dalai Lama's message with overwhelming military action, mobilizing a response out of Yunnan Province. The magical manifestations flare as the military marches in, forming the Maya Cloud that exists today and cutting off contact with the military force.
  • 2011 - 2012 - Sasquatch visit the Pangboche Monastery immediately after the Awakening.
  • 2012, Jan 12 Tibet gains its independence, thanks in large part to the Maya Cloud that protects and isolates the nation.
  • 2012 - The 14th Dalai Lama dies of natural causes while the new nation of Tibet is still forming. Contact with Tibet effectively ceases.
  • 2052 - Soldiers from the Chinese military force sealed within the Maya Cloud in 2011 are "exiled" from Tibet.
  • 2061 - The 15th Dalai Lama dies in his sleep.
  • 2061 - 2062 - The Maya Cloud becomes even more powerful during the passing of Halley's Comet but, since then, begins to weaken enough that some travel through it is possible as of 2064.

Politics[]

The head of state is nominally the Dalai Lama. However, with the death of the 15th Lama in 2061, Tibet is without a leader until the 16th Dalai Lama can be found. Until then, it is ruled by the two Stewards of Tibet: the 12th Panchen Lama, who is to tutor the young Dalai Lama; and the Nechung Kuten, or State Oracle.

Geography[]

Tibet's - this includes the territory of the former country of Bhutan[2] - delineated by the Maya Cloud, Tibet is located within the Tibetan Plateau in southern Asia, with the Himalaya Mountains to the south and extending north past the Yangtze River. It borders Turkestan to the west, the Indian Union to the south and southwest, and the Chinese nation-states to the north, east and southeast.

Economy[]

Tibet has effectively been sealed off from the world for over half a century. The people of Tibet mostly live an agrarian life, with the magic and influence of the Vajrayana (Tibetan) Buddhist monks pervading the entirety of society. As such, the economy is based on sustenance farming and livestock.

There is no corporate presence within Tibet. However, several corporations and groups with interests in magic operate outside the border of the Maya Cloud, studying it and trying to get ahold of any magical artifacts (and people) that make their way out; specifically the Dunkelzahn Institute of Magical Research, the Atlantean Foundation, Wuxing Incorporated, and the Apep Consortium.
